A Brief History of the Camellia Fashioned

The Camellia Fashioned is our take on an Old Fashioned, however there's nothing old fashioned about a Camellia Fashioned!  The Old Fashioned's history can be traced back to the early 19th century when it was simply known as a "whiskey cocktail." As bartending evolved, so did the cocktail, and the term "Old Fashioned" came to signify a return to the traditional, uncomplicated way of making a cocktail.

The first recorded mention of an Old Fashioned cocktail was in 1880, and by the late 19th century, it had become a staple in American cocktail culture. Its enduring appeal can be attributed to its straightforward ingredients and the way it allows the flavour of the whiskey to shine.

Fast forward to 2022 and adding black tea liqueur, scrumptiously compliments whiskey, highlighting citrus notes and adding waves of sweet caramel.

Over the years, the Old Fashioned has continued to captivate cocktail enthusiasts and is often hailed as one of the essential classics in the cocktail world and the adaptation of the Camellia Fashioned will re-enforce it's popularity to new audiences globally.

Taste and Flavour Profile

The Camellia Fashioned is a cocktail of elegant simplicity, characterised by its well-balanced flavours:

  • Whiskey: The cornerstone of the Old Fashioned, whiskey—usually bourbon or rye—brings a warm, oaky depth with hints of caramel and spice.
  • Camellia Tea Liqueur: A subtle black tea core, with caramel honied orange hints complements the whiskey's richness.
  • Bitters: A dash or two of aromatic bitters, often Angostura, adds complexity and depth, with notes of spices and herbs.
  • Orange and Cherry Garnish: An orange twist and maraschino cherry garnish add a touch of sweetness and a burst of aroma.

The result is a cocktail that's smooth, well-rounded, and exudes an air of timeless elegance—a true modern classic that captivates the senses.

Food Pairings

To enhance your Camellia Fashioned experience, consider these delectable food pairings:

  • Charcuterie Board: A selection of cured meats, cheeses, and accompaniments like olives and nuts complements the cocktail's richness.
  • Steak: A well-cooked steak, especially a New York strip or ribeye, pairs wonderfully with the Camellia Fashioned's bold flavours.
  • Dark Chocolate: Rich, dark chocolate desserts harmonise with the cocktail's caramel and spice notes.
  • Oysters: Fresh oysters on the half shell provide a delightful contrast to the cocktail's depth.

What's the best Whiskey for a Camellia Fashioned?

The best whiskey for an Old Fashioned cocktail is a matter of personal preference, and it often depends on your taste and the flavour profile you prefer. Both bourbon and rye whiskey are popular choices for a Camellia Fashioned, and each brings its own unique characteristics to the cocktail. Here are some considerations for both:

  • Bourbon Whiskey: Bourbon is known for its sweet and rich flavour profile, which includes notes of caramel, vanilla, and oak. It is an excellent choice if you want a sweeter and smoother Camellia Fashioned. Popular brands like Maker's Mark, Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve, and Basil Haydens are often used for bourbon-based Old Fashioneds.
  • Rye Whiskey: Rye whiskey has a spicier and more robust flavour profile compared to bourbon. It typically includes notes of pepper, cinnamon, and herbs. Using rye whiskey in a Camellia Fashioned will result in a cocktail with a bit more complexity and a drier finish. Brands like Bulleit Rye, Rittenhouse Rye, and Templeton Rye are common choices for rye-based Old Fashioneds.

Ultimately, the best whiskey for your Camellia Fashion depends on your personal taste preferences. You can also experiment with different whiskey brands and types to find the one that suits your palate and creates the Camellia Fashioned that you enjoy the most. Whether you choose bourbon or rye, the key is to use a high-quality whiskey that you appreciate on its own, as it plays a central role in this classic cocktail.
